I’m a huge fan of the Hannibal books by Thomas Harris and the Anthony Hopkins movies, but I haven’t been watching the new series because Tumblr makes it look like every “two average good looks white dudes backsass each other, one is always exasperated” show I don’t care about

I sincerely hope the comment about Hannibal getting a Sherlock-like following on tumblr isn’t true. I thought Sherlock was okay, but it’s one of the few instances where I let the fandom kill whatever enjoyment I had for the show. I really enjoy Hannibal, it’s the only show I make an effort to watch on live TV. It’s slow to start, but Mads Mikkelsen made it all worth it.

Ugh Hal Jordan is white! So that’s not whitewashing.

Hal Jordan is white, but the Green Lantern who is most familiar to the mass audiences that movies are supposedly trying to capture is John Stewart, pictured on the left.

Yeah. John Stewart has been the Green Lantern in pretty much every DCAU production. In making Hal the star of the movie, they pretty much did exactly what John has complained of in the comics - everyone deeming him the “Black one” and Hal the default GL.

Choosing Hal over John (and not putting him in a history montage or cameo) was very deliberate, and goes beyond wanting to do an origins story.

Whitewashing isn’t limited to making characters white, but also includes choosing whose stories get to be told.

Can I get an AMEN on this.

Because we’re talking about comics.

Comics with multiverses and multiple iterations of many of their flagship characters.

So…y’know “Well, he’s the white GL” doesn’t actually fly.

And the only way mainstream audiences would know who Hal Jordan was is if they watched old school Justice League or watched that “Once and a Future Thing” episode from Justice League Unlimited in which Hal and John switched places due to the time streams collapsing.

So yeah, don’t fuck with me on this. Hal is considered the “default” GL because he’s white but what everyone seems so keen on forgetting is that the Green Lantern is a GROUP and there are millions of stories they could have told (because John and Hal aren’t the only recognizable members of the GLC) but they chose to go with “Hal Jordan”…and even then they managed to botch it.

And there’s no way you can derail this discussion and try and make EXCUSES for whitewashing. Like…the fact that you are even trying makes it plaintively clear why posts like these need to exist and circulate.

Uh…. there’s a lot of misinformation about Green Lantern going on here. I apologize if it’s been mentioned before, but I didn’t feel like reading through over a thousand notes to verify.

I don’t agree with the Hal Jordan inclusion here at all. Maybe he’s considered the ‘default’ Green Lantern because he was Earth’s first Green Lantern for the GLC? That you can’t really tell a John Stewart origin story that’s related to the comics without acknowledging Hal? What kind of sense would it have made (if movie cared about being true to the comics) to have Stewart be shown in a history montage or cameo when he didn’t get the lantern mantle until after Jordan?

Or heck, how about how John Stewart wasn’t the first lantern introduced in the DCAU? My first introduction to GL as a kid was through Superman: TAS when Kyle Rayner was given parts of Jordan’s back story to become the GL. Rayner was put on a bus by the time JL:TAS started and was gone until JLU addressed his disappearance. At the time JL:TAS came out, fans were complaining that Jordan wasn’t being used because he has always been the most popular lantern. Or even Rayner, since he was already acknowledged as Earth’s lantern in the AU canon. Stewart was chosen to add diversity. Which turned out to be awesome because Stewart’s personality made for an more interesting group dynamic (I never liked Rayner).

Other than the JL shows and Static Shock (I think he also had a Young Justice cameo?), I would like someone to explain to me how Stewart has been the GL in a majority of DCAU productions. In terms of appearances, that would also go to Jordan. Even before the live action film was made, Jordan was in all the DCAU films with a GL character. They didn’t suddenly remove Stewart from the original comic stories the movies were based on because of that awful live action movie.

Hal Jordan was arguably the most definitive lantern long before JL:TAS was even on air, he probably always will be. That doesn’t stop being true because Stewart was some people’s first introduction to the character.

It’s like calling white-washing on The Amazing Spider-Man because they used Peter Parker instead of Miles. Peter doesn’t stop being the ‘default’ Spider-Man because of Miles’ introduction.

I love this outfit, but I really don’t like Robin’s facial design in this. It barely looks a thing like her. It’s some sort of Nami/Robin hybrid and it’s really off putting.

I really want to see this movie, I just hope her face isn’t like this for most of the film….

I agree 100% on your assessment of The Last Airbender, but I’m still on the fence about Goku. Seeing as Goku isn’t even from Earth, his ethnicity really could have been anything. If anything I’m surprised people get more annoyed at Goku being caucasian than Bulma. Green/purple hair doesn’t indicate caucasian, and she’s apart of a primarily asian cast. The argument for an asian actress felt stronger for Bulma, imo.

You have a valid point. If I saw a kid’s book about an Albertan rat I’d be waiting for the story to address the massive elephant in the room on the rat policy. If it was omitted, it would just feel like a huge bit of ignorance on the author’s part.

Someone at the UoA recently posted up a poster of their missing pet rat. You’d hope it was a joke, but the owner put their name and contact info (including address) on the poster. I’d like to think someone just put up a convincing fake poster just to get a reaction. I don’t think I’ve met a single person in Alberta that isn’t aware about the rat policy, so someone actually publicly admitting to housing a rat seems like a tremendous feat of stupidity.
